Victor Frankenstein sacrifices his health, relationships, and time to satisfy his desires of creating life. As he studies constantly, becomes sickly isolated, and loses loved ones, Victor creates a miserable life for himself in order to achieve something greater. Because of Victor's sacrifices and abandonment of Mo, his monster desires to be accepted by the world, by relating to the DeLaceys, breaking companionship, and having a willingness to take the lives of others. Both obsessive characters obtain unethical personalities at certain points in the book, to make known their wishes.

Frankenstein’s isolation at the university separates him and his family. The lack of love shown while he is away portrays the act of breaking relationships because of his work. The paleness and illness that Victor comes down with, puts his health at risk, again suggesting his determination. Mo also grows to be a disfavored character, when his experiences and hate drive him to kill others. Although Mo’s intentions are understandable and recognized, selfishness and pride guide him to making decisions solely to get revenge on his creator. The murderings in Mo’s hands provide a useful example of Mo’s consuming aspirations. Frankenstein and Mo sacrifice important aspects of their lives to the point of obsession over their greatest desires.
